Plante dicotylédone (de la famille des Cactées), originaire d'Amérique, à tiges aplaties en raquette dont les tubercules munis d'épines portent de grandes fleurs, et qui comprend diverses variétés comme le nopal ou le figuier de barbarie. Synon. cour. raquette. Ces crochets rendent difficile l'extraction d'un piquant d'Opuntia implanté dans la peau (Bot., 1960, p.1057 [Encyclop. de la Pléiade]). Le groupe des oponces (Opuntia) représente un immense nombre de cactées (...). leur aire de dispersion va de la Patagonie jusqu'au Canada, des littoraux marins jusqu'à 4000 m d'altitude (J. , R. , trad. fr., Encyclop. des cactus, Paris, Gründ, 1981, p.86).

Opuntius «d'Oponte» (dér. de Opus, Opuntis, gr. , «Oponte, capitale de la Locride, pays de la Grèce ancienne»), littéral «plante d'Oponte», ce nom ayant été donné à cette plante, parce que, selon Pline, elle poussait près de cette ville (v. PLINE, Historia naturalis, éd. J.André, livre21, §104); oponce forme francisée.
